Nervous about starting a new gym? How to beat gym anxiety

- Almost everyone feels nervous before their first class. You're not alone.
- Booking a beginner-friendly class and telling your coach you're nervous helps a lot.
- Nobody is watching you as much as you think. Everyone is focused on their own workout.
- The first five minutes are the hardest. After that, you're just part of the class.
Feeling nervous before your first gym class is completely normal. Almost everyone feels it: worrying about not being fit enough, not knowing what to do, or everyone watching. The good news is that a few simple steps make that first visit far easier, and a welcoming gym will do most of the work for you.
Why do so many of us feel anxious about the gym?
It's a new place, full of people who seem to know what they're doing, and nobody likes feeling like a beginner. Add a few years of not exercising, or a bad experience in the past, and it's no wonder the hardest part is walking through the door. Here's the thing coaches know: the people already training were all beginners once, and most of them remember exactly how it felt.
8 tips to make your first class easier
- Book a beginner-friendly class. Classes aimed at newcomers move at a gentler pace and the coach expects lots of questions.
- Message the gym first. A quick hello on WhatsApp means the coach knows your name before you arrive.
- Bring a friend. Training with someone you know takes the edge off.
- Arrive 10 minutes early. You'll have time to find your way, meet the coach and settle in before things start.
- Tell your coach you're nervous. It's not embarrassing. It helps them look after you.
- Wear what's comfortable. Comfy clothes and trainers are all you need. Nobody's checking your kit.
- Go at your own pace. You can always slow down, take a breather or do a lighter version.
- Focus on you. Everyone else is concentrating on their own workout, honestly.

When it's more than nerves
A bit of nervousness usually fades after the first session or two. If anxiety is affecting your daily life, it's worth talking to your GP, or visiting Mind for information and support. Gentle, regular exercise in a friendly group can be a positive part of looking after yourself, at whatever pace suits you.
