Is CrossFit safe for beginners? What really happens in your first class

- CrossFit is safe for beginners when it's properly coached and scaled to you.
- Most injuries in any exercise come from poor technique or doing too much too soon.
- In a good class, a coach adjusts the weights, movements and reps for every person.
- Your first class should feel welcoming and manageable, not like an audition.
Yes, CrossFit is safe for beginners, as long as it's well coached and scaled to you. Like any form of exercise, the risks come from poor technique or doing too much too soon. In a good CrossFit gym, a qualified coach watches your technique, builds you up gradually and adjusts every workout to your current level, so you start where you are.
Why does CrossFit have a scary reputation?
Most of what people see of CrossFit online is elite athletes competing: huge weights, gymnastics and people collapsing at the finish. That's the sport at its very top level, and it looks nothing like an ordinary class in a community gym.
A regular class is much more like small-group personal training. The same session is adapted for a first-timer, a parent getting back into exercise and someone who's been training for years, all in the same room.
What does "scaling" mean?
Scaling is the secret to why CrossFit works for beginners. Everyone does the same session, but your coach changes the weight, the movement or the number of reps to suit you. For example:
- A workout with pull-ups might become ring rows or band-assisted pull-ups.
- Box jumps might become step-ups.
- A heavy barbell might become a light bar or a pair of dumbbells.
- Twenty reps might become ten.
You still get a great workout, and you build towards the harder versions over time, if and when you want to.
What happens in your first CrossFit class?
At ORE CrossFit, every class lasts an hour and follows the same simple pattern:
- Today's plan and warm-up. Your coach walks everyone through the session, then a warm-up gets you moving.
- Strength or skill. Building strength with a lift, or learning and practising a new move, with the coach checking your technique.
- The workout, your way. Everyone does their own version, with lighter weights and easier options always ready.
- Cool down. Stretch, catch your breath and high-five.
On your first visit, a coach will meet you, show you around and stay close to you through the whole session. We limit the number of free tasters in each class so the coach can look after newcomers properly.
How to tell if a CrossFit gym is well run
Not every gym is the same, so here are a few things to look for:
- A qualified coach leads every class and actually watches what people are doing.
- Scaling is normal, not something you have to ask for.
- There's a clear way in for beginners, such as free tasters, a beginners' course or beginner-friendly classes.
- You're asked about your health before you start.
- Nobody pressures you to lift more or go faster than you're ready for.
What if I have an injury or a health condition?
Tell your coach before the class. A good coach will work around it, and there's almost always a version of the workout that suits you. When you book a free taster with us, we ask one simple health question so a coach can check in with you first. If you have a heart condition or you're unsure whether you should be exercising, speak to your GP before you start.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be fit to start CrossFit?
No. Every workout is scaled to your current level, so you start where you are and build up at your own pace.
Will I get hurt doing CrossFit?
Injuries in any exercise usually come from poor technique or doing too much too soon. A qualified coach, sensible scaling and gradual progress keep the risk low.
How often should a beginner do CrossFit?
Two or three classes a week is a good start. It gives your body time to recover and adapt as you build up.
Can I do CrossFit with an old injury?
Usually, yes. Tell your coach so they can adapt the movements. If you're unsure, check with your GP or physio first.
