Starting CrossFit over 40 (or 50, or 60): is it too late?

Key points
  • It's not too late. Many people start CrossFit and functional fitness in their 40s, 50s and beyond.
  • The NHS recommends adults do strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week.
  • Starting later just means warming up well, scaling sensibly and allowing time to recover.
  • A coached class gives you expert eyes on your technique from day one.

No, it's not too late. Plenty of people start CrossFit and functional fitness in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, and many say they wish they'd started sooner. The key is good coaching: workouts scaled to your level, a sensible warm-up and enough time to recover between sessions.

Why strength matters more as we get older

As we age, we naturally lose muscle and strength unless we do something about it. Keeping strong helps with the everyday things that matter: getting up from the floor, carrying shopping, climbing stairs, playing with grandchildren and staying independent.

That's why the NHS physical activity guidelines recommend that adults do activities that strengthen the major muscles on at least 2 days a week, alongside regular moderate activity. Functional fitness classes tick both boxes in one session.

What's different when you start later?

Not much changes about the workout itself. It's the approach that matters:

  • A good warm-up. We spend time getting joints and muscles ready before anything gets harder.
  • Scaling. Your coach adjusts the weights, movements and reps to suit you, and that's completely normal.
  • Recovery. Rest days are part of the plan. Two or three classes a week is plenty to start with.
  • Patience. Progress is steady, and it's very real. Strength can be built at any age.

"I'll be the oldest one there"

This is one of the most common worries, and it's rarely true. Community gyms like ours have members of all ages training side by side. One of our members, Anthony, put it like this:

"I have achieved more here at ORE CrossFit than I could have ever achieved at a gym in terms of mobility, cardiovascular health and functionality."

Age isn't a barrier to competing either, if that ever appeals. Our head coach, Adam, came 2nd at the British Functional Fitness Championships in 2026 and 6th at the European Masters Championships. But you don't need to compete to belong. Most people come simply to feel fitter and stronger.

"What about my joints?"

If you have stiff knees, a sore back or an old injury, tell your coach. Most movements have a gentler version: a squat to a box, a lighter weight, a shorter range of movement. Many people find their joints feel better once they're stronger and moving more. If you have a heart condition, are managing a health issue or are unsure whether exercise is right for you, speak to your GP first.
