What is hybrid training? A beginner's guide (no racing required)

- Hybrid training combines strength work and endurance work in the same session.
- It's for anyone who wants all-round fitness, not just people training for a race.
- Every part can be scaled, so you don't need to be fit, or a runner, to start.
- At ORE, the HYBRID class runs every Friday at 18:30 and your first session is free.
Hybrid training is a way of exercising that mixes strength and endurance in the same session. Instead of doing weights one day and cardio another, you combine simple functional movements, like carrying, pushing, squatting and lunging, with steady work that builds your stamina, like rowing or cycling. The result is all-round fitness that helps in everyday life, whether or not you ever enter a race.
What does hybrid training actually mean?
"Hybrid" simply means two things blended together. In fitness, it's the blend of being strong and having a good engine. Most traditional gym routines focus on one or the other. Hybrid training deliberately trains both, often in the same workout.
A typical session might have you moving between a rowing machine, a set of kettlebell swings, some walking lunges and a sled push, at a pace you can keep going for a while. It's challenging, but it's not about being the fastest. It's about building the kind of fitness where carrying the shopping, chasing the kids or walking up a big hill all feel easier.
Who is hybrid training for?
Hybrid training suits far more people than its reputation suggests. It's a great fit if you:
- want to get fitter and build stamina without spending hours on a treadmill
- have done some running and want to get stronger
- have done weights and want better fitness and conditioning
- get bored easily and like variety
- fancy a goal to aim for one day, like a hybrid fitness race
You don't need to want to race. Plenty of people train hybrid simply because it's a fun, efficient way to get fit.
Is hybrid training the same as a hybrid fitness race?
Not quite. Hybrid fitness races, like HybridNW, take the same ingredients and turn them into an event: stations of functional exercises with a run before each one. They're a brilliant goal if you want one. HybridNW holds large-scale events at big venues in Telford and other towns and cities across the North of England, and the next HybridNW Telford is on Saturday 9 January 2027.
A hybrid class uses the same kinds of movements, but without the race pressure. You train at your level, your coach adjusts everything to suit you, and there's no stopwatch you have to beat. ORE CrossFit is an official HybridNW affiliate gym, so if you ever do want to race, the same classes will help you get ready.
What happens in a hybrid class at ORE?
Our HYBRID class runs every Friday at 18:30 at our gym on Halesfield 5, Telford. It's simple functional fitness with an endurance focus, and like all our classes it lasts an hour and is fully coached. Here's roughly how it goes:
- The plan and a warm-up. Your coach walks everyone through the session, then a warm-up gets you moving.
- Learning the movements. Your coach shows you each movement and how to make it lighter or easier.
- The main session. You work through a mix of stations, such as rowing, bike, wall balls, carries, lunges and sled pushes, at a steady pace you can keep up.
- Cool down. Stretch and catch your breath.
Do I need to be fit, or a runner, to start?
No. This is the most common worry we hear, and the honest answer is that the class is built for people starting from wherever they are. Your coach will adjust the weights, the distances and the pace for you. Walking is fine. Taking a breather is fine. Everyone is working at their own level.
If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, just let us know when you book. Our booking form asks one simple health question so a coach can check in with you first. If you're unsure whether exercise is right for you, it's always worth speaking to your GP.
What are the benefits of hybrid training?
- Stamina and strength together. You build both, rather than one at the expense of the other.
- Fitness for real life. Lifting, carrying, pushing and keeping going are things we all do every day.
- Variety. No two sessions feel the same, which helps you stay motivated.
- Efficiency. You get a lot of training done in one hour.
- A goal if you want one. Hybrid races give you something to aim for, but they're entirely optional.
